Background
The RIBA Norman Foster Travelling Scholarship, generously supported by the Norman Foster Foundation with Foster + Partners, offers one travelling scholarship of £7,000 to a student of architecture to support international research on a topic and at locations of the student’s choosing.
The topic of the research should, however, relate to the sustainable survival of our cities and towns and fall under one of the following themes:
- learning from the past to inform the future
- the future of society
- density of settlements
- use of resources
- quality of urban life
- transport
The travel should take place between July and October 2020.
Upon the completion of the travel the student will be invited to present their research at the Norman Foster Foundation.
Eligibility
To be eligible, students must:
- be enrolled in a professional qualification in architecture from a school invited by the RIBA
and
- have successfully completed at least the first year of a professional qualification in Architecture.
To check if your school is eligible, please have a look at the invited schools list available at www.architecture.com/fosterscholarship
How to apply
Each invited school can submit one application for the scholarship from one of its students. Each school chooses its own method of selecting its student but the completed application form must be signed by the Head of School.
The application consists of:
- one completed application form signed by the student AND the Head of School and
- one A1 ‘poster’ presented as a pdf file detailing the proposal (topic, objective, locations). Applicants are restricted to 500 words on the poster submission, and images should be high-resolution
Please consider carefully your choice of font size, font colour and background colour to ensure legibility of your panel. You do not need to submit a printed copy.
Please ensure that your name, your tutor’s name, and the name of your School of Architecture / University are NOTmentioned anywhere on your poster.
Audio-visual supporting materials are welcome, and must be submitted as MP3 or MP4 files. Although limits to the length of these files are not imposed, nominees should consider that the judges have limited time to examine them; as such, we recommend a maximum duration of 2 minutes per file.
The RIBA and the Norman Foster Foundation do not claim rights of ownership to the applications submitted for the RIBA Norman Foster Travelling Scholarship.
By applying for the scholarship, the nominee(s) agree(s) to allow the RIBA and the Norman Foster Foundation to use, display and publish their entries in print and digital publications for all purposes in relation to the RIBA Norman Foster Scholarship and associated non-commercial purposes.
For any enquiries regarding the application process, please contact Gillian Harrison at the RIBA: Gillian.Harrison@riba.org
Please also send your application form and A1 ‘poster’ together, via a file transfer service (such as WeTransfer) to Gillian.Harrison@riba.org
Selection criteria & process
The judges will seek to award a student who demonstrates the potential for outstanding achievement and original thinking on issues relating to the survival and the future of our cities and towns.
