(n.) Latin; ( ap– + parāre; = prepare ) + ( –tus suffix = action )

A complex mechanism made up of a combination of different organs and tools working together for a singular purpose. Architecture.

It is not the desire to be known by it, but rather to contain every tool we need to express what we are: Architects. Our essence is driven by the aspiration for spatiality, through the exacerbation of reality, the tender dreams of responding to a society, in order to emancipate it.

Apparatus is a Lisbon-based design, architecture, urban design and research practice, based on the exploration of means to challenge existing typologies and inform new contexts, in order to respond to a permanent changing society. Founded in 2016, the practice is also present and acting in Paris and Brasilia, and focused on cultural, urban and self-initiated projects at any scale.

The think tank is led by co-founders founders Filipe LOURENÇO and Gabriella GAMA, for whom design is the engagement of the senses and physicality of the body, while nurturing social and environmental interaction, in order to promote both individual and collective empowerment in the communities where work.

Apparatus is currently developing architecture and design projects in France, Portugal and Brazil. It is our understanding that working in different countries gives us valuable cultural and economic insights, which creates the foundation of Apparatus continuously evolving its professional knowledge base.
